CGA - Proposed Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project in the Coega Special Economic Zone, Gqeberha, Eastern Cape

Coega Green Ammonia (Pty) Ltd is proposing to develop and operate a 1 400 MW green hydrogen electrolyser and associated ammonia production plant within Zone 7 of the Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Gqeberha. The project will be powered by various identified renewable energy sources, and the produced ammonia will be exported through the Port of Ngqura. SLR has been appointed to undertake the required Scoping and EIA process for the proposed project.

Status

On behalf of Coega Green Ammonia (Pty) Ltd (CGA), notice is hereby given that on 16 January 2026 the Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) granted and issued an Environmental Authorisation for the above-mentioned project in terms of the National Environment Management Act, 1998 (No. 107 of 1998) (NEMA) and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations 2014. This provides CGA with authorisation to, inter alia, develop and operate a green hydrogen and ammonia production facility within Zone 7 of the Coega Special Economic Zone, including associated infrastructure.
